The American Saddlebred Museum is accepting consignments to be considered for inclusion in the 2013 Equine Art, Antique and Rare Book Auction. The auction will be held on Saturday July 13th at the Museum’s Showplace for Saddlebreds in conjunction with the Lexington Jr. League Horse Show. Deadline for submission of consignments is March 25, 2013.
The auction is open to artwork in any medium, as well as rare books, unique antiques and historic artifacts. If you buy, sell, collect or create paintings, pastels, sculpture, charcoals, prints, carvings, etchings, antiques, rare books or historic artifacts, you’ll want to take note of this sales/marketing opportunity. The Museum publishes a four-color catalogue for this sale.
Each year the auction attracts artwork and buyers from a wide variety of equine interests and disciplines. In addition to Saddlebreds, coaching, Standardbred, Morgan, Draft, Hackney, Thoroughbred and hunting and jumping themes have become popular at the venue. Other items of interest are rare books, collectibles, equine-themed painted furniture, jewelry and historic artifacts and photographs.
If you have any items you’d like to offer for sale, and need more information or would like to receive a consignment contract, conditions of sale or an auction catalogue, please contact Tolley Graves at the Saddlebred Museum at 859-259-2746. The results of all past auctions can be viewed on the Museum’s website, www.asbmuseum.org.
The Museum’s 2013 special exhibit is sure to entertain and interest industry members and the general public. Entitled The Art of Selling with Saddlebreds: The Show Horse in Vintage Advertising, it will feature images of our breed on products, printed advertising and corporate collectibles dating from the late 1800’s through the 1970’s.
An Opening Reception will be held on Friday February 15th at 6:30 p.m. in conjunction with ASHA’s Annual Convention. The event will be “Kentucky Proud” inspired. The star of the evening will, of course, be Kentucky’s native breed of horse, but will also feature ambiance provided by Longwood Antique Woods and a complimentary premium bourbon tasting by Four Roses Distillery. Reserve your place now! See details below
From cigarettes and tobacco to liquor, motor oil, hotels, fruits and vegetables, automobiles, jewelry stores and more, the Saddlebred has been used in advertising through the years to denote the highest quality. The 2013 exhibit assembles the largest collection of these items to ever have been displayed together. This unique exhibit offers a glimpse of yesteryear and the esteem the Saddlebred held in society and the marketplace.
Cost for the event is $45/person, or $40 if you register on ASHA’s Convention Form for the entire convention package. Includes dinner, The Art of Selling with Saddlebreds exhibit, premium bourbon tasting by Four Roses of Lawrenceburg, KY and an evening of fun with your Saddlebred friends! ATTENTION ALL YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULTS!
The Museum’s Young Adult Committee is sponsoring an Art Contest! The Contest will be divided into two divisions, prizes being awarded in both divisions. Divisions are for Youth (18 and under) and Young Adults (19 – 35). Categories for artwork for each division include: Drawing and Painting; Sculpture; Photography; and Mixed Media (i.e. digital, paper, needlework, mosaic, jewelry, etc.).
1) All work must be original and be completed by the entrant.
2) Works must be Saddlebred-related in theme.
3) Hanging artwork must be limited to a size of 8” x 8” up to 20” x 20”, with overall framed measurements not to exceed 30”. All frameable art must be submitted in a simple black frame with a hook or a wire to facilitate hanging.
4) In lieu of a submission fee, all entrants will be required to be Museum Members
Youth membership fee is $10 for a year.
Young Adult membership is $20 for a year.
5) Photograph completed entry before shipping or delivery and email photo (in jpg format) to email@example.com.
6) Entries must be received by the Museum no later than January 15, 2013.
Art work will be judged by a panel of experts from various genres. Each age division will be judged separately, but all categories in the division will be judged against each other. The panel will choose the top 10 entries from each age division. Photos of each of the 20 items will then be posted on Facebook and the overall winners will be selected by the highest number of “Likes” received. The winner of each age division will receive a $500 gift card to the Apple Store, most generously donated by Carol Hillenbrand! The rest of the top 10 entrants will also receive a prize. Additionally, the 2 overall winning works may be considered for printing as post cards, note cards or Christmas cards, depending on suitability of subject matter.
The top 10 entries from each age division will be on display at the Museum beginning the first week in February until the last week in April 2013. Attendees to ASHA’s Annual Convention and the Spring Premier Horse Show (along with the general public) will have the opportunity to view the artwork. Please address any questions about this contest to Ashley Hallock at firstname.lastname@example.org. Grab your art supplies and let your creative juices flow! If you are an aspiring artist, this is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for!
